Fresh to the workforce, and grateful to have landed at Delightful – I’m Iqra and I’m Delightful Communications newest member. I am currently working as a Digital Marketing Coordinator; I’ve had an amazing time in this role. I truly enjoy the work that I do, and I’m looking forward to my future here.
Born and raised in Washington State, I have local roots, but a global mindset. Receiving my degree in Media and Communication studies from the University of Washington Bothell, I spent my college days studying the advertising landscape, the politics of representation and reading plenty of Foucault. As you do in college.
I had various internships during my undergraduate career. My first internship was with Microsoft as a Microsoft Apprentice. We were referred to as MAP FY16 – a catchy title. I spent my time at Microsoft placed in Office in Education. My job was to shadow my supervisor and help as the team advertised Office in Education to various universities around the country. It was an intensive year-long program. I learned how to balance time-sensitive tasks, work within a large organization and gained hands-on experience during my time there.
My second internship was with the City of Seattle. My time at the city was spent on the Communications Team for the Office of Economic Development and the Office of Film and Music. During that time, I wrote blog posts, handled social media and helped with various communications tasks. The Office of Economic Development primarily aided small businesses around Seattle, when I was handling their communication tasks, I was writing from a very technical perspective. As opposed to when I was writing for the Office of Film and Music, I was writing about arts and culture. I was able to switch gears and write about topics that were vastly different. While still having a ‘government’ voice. I hope to bring this flexibility to my current position.
I am deeply interested in marketing and communication in relation to technology and the arts. But outside my love for what I do, I’m also quite passionate about literature, film, and beautiful sunsets. The ‘media’ portion of my Media and Communications degree had a film element of it; this really increased my love for film. My personal favorite is Moonlight (2016).
Of Somali-Oromo descent (one parent for each ethnicity) – I am a first-generation American, and college graduate. With 5 siblings and a cat – the cat is my favorite sibling. I resonate deeply with all of the Delightful Principles, but I appreciate ‘family first’ as a company principle. I may have semi-recently graduated, but as a lifelong learner, ‘always learning’ also resonates with me.
Overcome with joy and gratitude to be joining the Delightful team, I hope to bring as much to the team, as I surely will be learning.
